Stay In Your Health Insurance Network

Free help for cancer patients

The health insurance system in the United States is complicated, and also highly specific. For instance, it may seem simple to choose a hospital in-network, but what if some of the doctors in that hospital are out of network? Or, what if the hospital sends tests to a lab out of network?

The biggest costs are out of network costs, so newly diagnosed patients should try to stay in-network as much as possible, Donovan says. Think about staying in-network and how far you have to go to do that and how much will it cost to get there. Transportation is the number one issue that patients call us about. The average amount patients need in rural areas for transport is $22 each way to go to chemo treatment.

If you need surgery, there could be a lot of unexpected costs, Donovan says. Make sure that everyone is in-network, including the anesthesiologist check on all of them individually. You have to make multiple phone calls. Its amazing how often people dont know if they are in-network. You need to ask.

Stay In Touch With Others Who Are Near Your Loved One

Develop a relationship with one or two key members of the health care team, such as a nurse, social worker or patient educator. It may help you feel more at ease to have direct contact with someone involved in the medical care of your loved one. You and other family members could arrange conference calls or online meetings with them and other members of the team for updates. Other tips include:

  • create a list of people who live near your loved one whom you could call day or night in a crisis or just to check in
  • look into volunteer visitors, adult day care centers, or meal delivery services in the area
  • make a list of websites in your loved one’s area to give you quick access to resources
  • ask if the hospital keeps visitor information packets or lists that list area agencies and contacts

An added benefit is that volunteers or staff there may be able to help if youre having trouble finding things.

Still, you dont need Internet access to find help. The American Cancer Society and many other organizations also provide toll-free phone numbers so that people without Internet access can learn about and ask for services.

Thus, an individual grant project may be listed in more than one cancer type.

Glossary Funded AmountThe total value of funding that was awarded to a single, or a group of, research or training grants for a specific type of cancer and includes funding for some grant projects that may be minimally related to that type of cancer .

Specific AmountThe portion of the total funding that was awarded to a single research project for a specific type of cancer. The specific amount is calculated by multiplying the total funded amount by the percent relevance for the type of cancer in question.

For example, a project with a funded amount of $120,000 that’s been coded with 50% relevance to the cancer type “lung” has specific funding of $60,000 for “lung.”

Does Cancer Count As A Disability For Social Security

The SSA lists several types of cancer in Section 13.00 of its online Blue Book. If you have any of the types of cancer listed in this section, you should automatically qualify for benefits regardless of the stage your cancer was detected in. Typically, the SSA recognizes particularly disabling and hard to treat cancers as automatic disabilities. In this category are all small-cell cancers, as well as:

    • Esophageal cancer
    • Brain cancer of all types
    • Inflammatory forms of breast cancer
    • Salivary gland cancer
    • Sino-nasal cancer

Even cancers that do not appear on the SSAs list could be counted as sufficiently disabling to merit SSDI benefits. Non-small-cell cancers that have survived more than three months of chemotherapy or spread to another organ, for example, are usually covered by SSDI. You could also qualify for what is called vocational disability, if your cancer is likely to interfere with your profession. An example of this could be a lifelong manual worker whose cancer makes it difficult to carry heavy loads or bend at the waist.
