Types Of Fedvip Enrollment
A self only enrollment covers only the enrolled employee or annuitant. An eligible individual may enroll in self only even though he/she has a family, but the family members are not covered.
A self plus one enrollment covers the enrolled employee or annuitant plus one eligible family member. Eligible individuals may enroll in self plus one even though they have more than one eligible family member, but the additional family members are not covered. The enrollee must specify during the enrollment process which one eligible family member he/she wishes to cover under a self plus one enrollment. The enrollee may change the covered family member to another eligible family member during an open season or because of a qualifying life event.
A self and family enrollment covers the enrolled employee or annuitant and all eligible family members. Enrollees should list all eligible family members when they enroll. All of the enrollees eligible family members are automatically covered, even if the enrollee fails to list all of them when enrolling on Benefeds, but claim payments may be delayed for family members who were omitted.
Generally, dual enrollmentwhen an individual is covered under more than one FEDVIP dental enrollment or more than one FEDVIP vision enrollmentis prohibited except when elimination of the dual enrollment would cause a covered person to lose coverage.
Dental And Vision Insurance
The Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program provides supplemental dental and vision insurance coverage. The FEDVIP is a program which is separate and different from the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program. Dental plans provide a comprehensive range of services. Vision plans provide comprehensive eye examinations and coverage for lenses, frames and contact lenses. Other benefits such as discounts on lasik surgery may also be available.
FEDVIP open season runs concurrently with the open season for the FEHB and the Flexible Spending Accounts for Federal Employees Program .

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management is proud to welcome members of the uniformed services to the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program . Sponsored by OPM, FEDVIP is a voluntary, enrollee-pay-all dental and vision insurance program. It replaced the former TRICARE Retiree Dental Program . Health Insurance The Federal Employees Health Benefits Program offers employees a wide array of health benefit options to choose from and allows an employee to select a plan that fits their needs and lifestyle. On average, the federal government pays 70% of health plan premiums while employees pay the remaining premium through payroll deductions. Federal Employee Dental And Vision Insurance Plan Choices
The Federal Employee Dental and Vision Benefits Enhancement Act of 2004 provided OPM the opportunity to establish arrangements under which supplemental dental and vision benefits are made available to federal employees, retirees, and their dependents. Dependents include spouses and children under the age of 22.
Dental and vision benefits are available to eligible federal and postal service employees, annuitants, and to their eligible family members on an enrollee-pay-all basis through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program . The FEDVIP allows dental insurance and vision insurance to be purchased on a group basis which means competitive premiums and no pre-existing condition limitations. Premiums paid by enrolled federal and postal employees in the FEDVIP are always withheld from an employees gross salary.
Employees and annuitants who wish to dis-enroll from their current dental and/or vision insurance plan offered through FEDVIP must do so during the FEDVIP open season. They do so by going here.

Should I Purchase A Fedvip Dental Or Vision Plan
The Federal government offers standalone “FEDVIP” dental and vision plans, separate and distinct from the FEHB program. The FEDVIP program shares the same Open Season dates as the FEHB program, but you join them separately. To enroll, use Benefeds or call 1-877-888-3337. In sharp contrast to regular health insurance benefits, there is no direct Federal government contribution to the cost of the premium. You pay it all, though with substantial tax savings to employees .
While these plans do have an element of insurance, in that they protect you against some unforeseen dental or vision expenses, they are best thought of as primarily pre-paid care. Most people enroll in these kinds of plans because they know roughly what kinds of expenses to expect, and plan to do a little better than breaking even. In effect, you pay for those new contact lenses or your recurring dental expenses on the biweekly or monthly installment plan, with protection against some unanticipated expense.
Like FEHB plans, FEDVIP plans offer three enrollment options: self only, self plus one, self and family. The premiums for self plus family are almost always about double or triple the self-only premium.

More Dental And Vision Insurance Options For Federal Employees In 2021

The Office of Personnel Management announced last week that it has selected insurance carriers to provide comprehensive, accessible and competitively priced dental and vision coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Program , effective January 1, 2021. The contract term is seven years.
The competitive application process allowed OPM to strengthen the FEDVIP program through increased focus on wellness and education, OPM said in a press statement. OPM improved quality assurance, financial reporting processes, and enhanced fraud waste and abuse requirements.
In the 2021 plan year, the number of FEDVIP dental carriers will increase from 10 to 12. The number of vision carriers will increase from 4 to 5. OPM anticipates no disruption of enrollees continuity of services.
Eligible individuals may enroll, cancel, or change their enrollment during the Federal Benefits Open Season this year, November 9 to December 14, 2020.

In A New Proposed Rule Opm Would Extend Eligibility To Temporary And Part
The Office of Personnel Management is set to propose new rules this week that would grant around 86,000 federal employees access to the federal governments dental and vision insurance program.
A proposed rule slated for publication Tuesday in the Federal Register would extend eligibility to enroll in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program to temporary and part-time federal employees who work at least 130 hours per month for 90 or more days. Additionally, it would extend FEDVIP eligibility to temporary and intermittent federal firefighters and other first responders, whose shifts often do not meet the 130-hour per month for at least 90 days threshold.
The rule also would apply to temporary and part-time employees of the U.S. Postal Service who likewise work at least 130 hours a month for at least 90 days.
Temporary and seasonal federal workers have had access to the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program since 2015, while federal firefighters and other first responders were granted access to FEHBP in 2012.
OPM said in its proposed rule how these employees should be given the opportunity to enroll in FEDVIP, as well as the potential impact their joining will have on the overall program.
OPM is seeking public comment on the proposed rule the deadline to submit feedback is Dec. 17.

Feds Get Consistent Vision And Dental Options For 2022
Federal employees will get the same number of vision and dental insurance options in 2022 as they had in 2021, according to numbers released by the Office of Personnel Management Sept. 29.
Feds can choose from among 23 dental plans offered by 12 carriers, seven of which provide nationwide coverage, while the remaining five offer regional coverage.
Ten vision insurance plans will be available from five providers, all of which are offered nationally.
Costs for those plans will also see a minimal increase, with vision premiums going up by 0.95 percent on average and dental plans going up by 0.81 percent.
Vision and dental plans are optional choices for feds during open season, and employees cover the total costs of plan premiums themselves, without government contribution.
Insurance for vision and dental care, along with long term care insurance and flexible spending accounts, are offered through the BENEFEDS portal, which also manages the billing and customer service operations of such plans.
Open season for vision, dental and flexible spending accounts runs at the same time as Federal Employees Health Benefits open season from Nov. 8 to Dec. 13. BENEFEDS will host a virtual benefits fair for enrollees to talk with providers and review brochures during that same period.
Open Season And Enrollment
Open season to enroll in dental or vision coverage is in November and December. If you are a newly eligible employee, you can enroll in your first 60 days.
Also, if you have what OPM calls a qualifying life event, such as a marriage, you are open to enroll in dental and/or vision coverage. In addition to federal employees, federal retirees and eligible family members, which includes your spouse and/or unmarried dependent children under the age of twenty-two, can enroll in FEDVIP.
Federal employees must be eligible for FEHB to enroll in FEDVIP, but do not have to actually be enrolled in FEHB. Self Only, Self Plus One, and Self and Family coverages are available.

How To Prepare Prior To Open Season
To prepare for open season, TRICARE eligibles can go to to conduct plan choice research. Federal civilians will continue to use their familiar Benefeds.com enrollment website. Plan options, benefits, and rates will be the same for both groups in 2019.

The announcement affects 1.63 million beneficiaries enrolled in TRDP and offers a choice to an additional 1.3 million eligible retired beneficiaries not currently enrolled in TRDP. FEDVIP currently serves more than 3 million federal employees, retirees and their families.

Military retirees and their families as well as military dependents can now see what options they will have available to them for vision and dental insurance in 2021.
The Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program has released its selection of vision and dental insurance plans as well as pricing information for the upcoming year.
While the FEDVIP 2021 plans and rates have been made public, open enrollment season, which allows you to pick a new plan or make changes to your existing coverage, won’t begin until Nov. 9.
Open season is the time each year when you can make changes to your FEDVIP coverage for the following year. The rest of the year, you can make changes only if you have a Qualifying Life Event such as moving to a new area or changing your number of dependents.

Federal Employees Dental Insurance Program
Federal Employees receive dental benefits under the Dental and Vision Insurance Program , which provides comprehensive dental and vision insurance at competitive group rates. There are a total of ten dental plans for employees to review during the upcoming Open Season. FEDVIP features nationwide, international, and regional plans.
If you are currently enrolled in FEDVIP and you take no action during Open Season, your current coverage will continue automatically through into the next year, provided you remain eligible for the Program. Enrollment continues year to year.

Carrying Fedvip Into Retirement
If you plan to carry dental or vision coverage in retirement, there are several important nuances to make note of. As mentioned earlier, FEDVIP is a different program from FEHB, which means enrollment in FEDVIP for five years prior to retirement does not count as enrollment in FEHB. Unlike FEHB, FEDVIP does not require you to be enrolled in the program for five years prior to retirement. You can even enroll in a vision or dental plan in retirement if you need to.
To be eligible for FEDVIP in retirement, you must retire on an immediate annuity. If you are receiving a deferred annuity you will not be eligible for retaining your dental and/or vision coverage. If you retire under Minimum Retirement Age+ 10 with a postponed annuity, you will be able to retain FEDVIP in retirement.

Injury Compensationers And Survivors
Compensationers are eligible to enroll in FEDVIP or continue FEDVIP enrollment into compensation status. A family member receiving monthly compensation from the Office of Workers Compensation Programs as the surviving beneficiary of an employee who dies as a result of illness or injury sustained while in performance of his/her duty can enroll in FEDVIP or continue the deceaseds FEDVIP enrollment.
Fedvip Eligibility And Enrollment
Most federal employees who are eligible for Federal Employees Health Benefits program coverage are eligible for FEDVIP the main exception is that temporary employees and employees working on seasonal or intermittent schedules are not eligible for FEDVIP, even if they are eligible for FEHB.
FEDVIP conducts enrollment open seasons each autumn running concurrent with the FEHB open season. An eligible individual may enroll in a FEDVIP benefits plan for self-only, self and family, or self plus one , as described below.
Enrollments or changes in enrollments take place at www.benefeds.com, through a toll-free phone line, 888-3337, TTY 889-5680, or, in exceptional cases, through forms available from the employing agency.
Enrollment cannot be made through FEHB enrollment forms or through automated agency self-service systems many of those systems have links to Benefeds, however.
Re-enrollment is automatic each year unless an enrollee chooses to make a change during open season or a plan terminates its participation in FEDVIP.
Coverage changes are allowed due to certain life events as explained below.
