Series 70 Vs Series 80

Most people think of the difference between a Series 70 and Series 80 1911 as being all about the safety. Its true that seems to be the most noteworthy change made but there was more.

Oh, and the Series 70 was not the original M1911 platform or the M1911A1 it was the result of decades of changes and improvements. The safety is the most commonly discussed and noteworthy change, though.

The Series 80 was created by changing the Series 1970 firing pin safety . Those changes meant the gun wouldnt fire until the trigger was completely pressed back.

This was accomplished by adding a firing pin block that could only be moved out of the way by the aforementioned trigger press.

Basically, when the trigger is pressed a slim metal lift in the frame of the Series 80 1911 raises up and presses a safety plunger located in the slide, deactivating the firing pin block and allowing the gun to fire.

The change was a good way to make the guns drop safe. So yes, changes were made to one of the safety mechanisms.

Side note: that does not mean a modern Series 70 is unsafe. There is a slim chance of a Series 70 1911 firing if it is dropped from a significant height, muzzle down, but that chance was/is more of an issue with steel firing pins.

To circumvent that youll find manufacturers making changes like using titanium firing pins in their Series 70 1911s.

The 1911 is generally viewed as one of the finest combat pistols ever designed and the first successful self-loading pistol. The 1911 was designed by American firearms inventor John Browning and is the oldest service pistol in the world, still used in over 25 nations for over 100 years it has proven itself to be one of the most popular and timeless handguns ever made. The 1911 has inspired countless copies and similar designs, including the TT-33, SIG-Sauer P226, Browning Hi-Power, and CZ-75.

Then next major design came in 1983 with the Colt Mark IV Series 80. On this model, Colt added a safety feature in the form of a firing pin block system that made it impossible for the weapon to discharge if dropped or thrown on a hard surface. The new Colt Series 80 also incorporated the new barrel bushing of the Series 70, while being more reminiscent of the original M1911 by having a long trigger and flat mainspring housing.

The Series 80 was a monstrous success on both the commercial and military/law enforcement markets and promptly replaced the Series 70. The design spread to virtually every other manufacturer of 1911 as well, until almost all of the 1911s being sold on the market, regardless of manufacturer, could trace themselves to a Series 80 design. Even today whilst the Series 70 has been making a comeback, the overwhelming majority of 1911s sold are a Series 80 variant.

My Colt Mk Iv Series 80 Government Model 45 Acp

I bought this new when I was 16 by saving every cent of the $64 a week I made from my weekend job, for two months .

It is still mostly stock, but over the years I replaced three parts that Colt had cheapened by the time mine was made. I replaced the rubber grips with checkered walnut grips from Herrett’s Stocks and I replaced the plastic mainspring housing and plastic trigger with older Colt-manufactured steel versions. I never had any functional problems with those original cost-saving parts, I just didn’t like them. Had my gun been made a few years earlier it would have came from the factory with walnut grips and a steel mainspring housing and trigger. The changeover was in or around 1988 I believe.

It has never jammed or otherwise malfunctioned. The only problem I’ve ever had with it is that the plunger tube is a little loose, and I haven’t gotten around to buying a tool to re-stake it. The current walnut grips have the hood which gives the plunger tube support, which was part of the original M1911 design specifications, so that’s keeping the plunger tube from moving at least. The rubber grips it came with, which I used for many years, didn’t have that hood , so that’s why the plunger tube got loose in the first place.

Hickory would work great very strong and close-grained, so it would take checkering very well. Oak is open-grained so it might not take checkering quite as well, but it’s plenty strong.

Four Key Series 80 Parts Added

Colt 1911 MK IV Series 80 Government Model Pistol

The Series 80 1911 added four parts to the Series 70, and that is what some folks complain about, adding four unnecessary parts. More places for dirt to accumulate, grease to impinge operation, parts to go wrong, general malfunctions and stoppages to occur, and parts to break or affect reliability. It seems most earlier failures of Series 80 systems occurred because someone had a mediocre or inferior trigger job done, installed an entirely new trigger with a close tolerance overtravel stop or added a new trigger incorrectly, or reinstalled the used or damaged Series 80 component parts, perhaps not optimally, appropriately, or correctly. So, perhaps the triggers effective stroke was shortened, or the spring-loaded plunger was not installed to properly lift enough to clear the pins path.

Should You Buy A Series 80 Or Series 70 1911 Pistol

Over many years, the evolution of the 1911 pistol has seen a number of transformations. In about 1924, significant changes began to be introduced to Government Issued and commercial 1911 pistols, and today some are still made. Colt In the early 1970s introduced a new variation of the 1911A1 pistol called the SERIES 70 Model, which incorporated a major change designed to improve accuracy. This change was a collet-style barrel bushing with four flexible fingers. Originally, only 1911 Government frames had the Series 70 collet bushing.

Since Jan. 24, 1,100 workers have been on strike at the factory here and at a newer and larger plant in West Hartford that makes commercial guns. The dispute, between Local 376 of the United Automobile Workers and the Colt Firearms division of Colt Industries Inc., is primarily over wages and fringe benefits, according to both sides.

The start of the 7 A.M. shift on Wednesday was delayed an hour while the jubilant workers, armed with banners proclaiming “We Beat ‘Em and We Bought ‘Em,” celebrated their victory after four years on strike with a spirited rally outside Colt’s gritty, brick factory building.”It’s like being home again,” said 62-year-old William Smith, who maintained the gun-making machines for 22 years before he and 1,050 other members of United Auto Workers Local 376 walked off the job on Jan. 24, 1986, after 10 months without a contract. “I always took pride in the Colt product,” he said. ‘We all did. I was so damn happy to be hired here at Colt 22 years ago,” Mr. Smith said. “I wanted to work here where they made the guns.”

Early History And Adaptations

The M1911 pistol originated in the late 1890s as the result of a search for a suitable self-loading pistol to replace the variety of revolvers then in service. The United States was adopting new firearms at a phenomenal rate several new pistols and two all-new service rifles , as well as a series of revolvers by Colt and Smith & Wesson for the Army and Navy, were adopted just in that decade. The next decade would see a similar pace, including the adoption of several more revolvers and an intensive search for a self-loading pistol that would culminate in the official adoption of the M1911 after the turn of the decade.

Hiram S. Maxim had designed a self-loading rifle in the 1880s, but was preoccupied with machine guns. Nevertheless, the application of his principle of using cartridge energy to reload led to several self-loading pistols in 1896. The designs caught the attention of various militaries, each of which began programs to find a suitable one for their forces. In the U.S., such a program would lead to a formal test at the turn of the 20th century.

During the end of 1899 and start of 1900, a test of self-loading pistols, including entries from Mauser , Mannlicher , and Colt , was conducted.

The differences between Colt 1911 Models in .45 ACP:

  • Government: 5-inch barrel, 8+1 capacity .
  • Commander: 4.25-inch barrel, 8+1 capacity.
  • Officer: 3.5-inch barrel, 6 and 7+1 capacity.
  • Defender: 3-inch barrel, 7+1 capacity.

The venerable Model 1911A1 was manufactured by Colt until 1971. Shortly after the war, Colt introduced a new gun, the Commander, which was based on the Colt 1911 Government design. This gun was essentially a shortened version of the A1 and was manufactured with a 4.25-inch barrel. Formerly, a 5-inch barrel had been the standard for full size semi-autos. The new gun was the first to feature an aluminum frame. It was a startling innovation at the time because the handgun mindset was mostly limited to steel. Nevertheless, the shooting public readily accepted the Commander.
