The Importance Of Body Mass Index In Weight Loss Surgery Candidacy

One of the determining factors that Dr. Kuzinkovas takes into account when identifying if a patient is an appropriate candidate for bariatric surgery, as well as which type of weight loss surgery the person would benefit from, is the persons body mass index .

Although BMI does not specifically illustrate an individuals percentage of body fat, it is a helpful tool for categorizing overall body weight according to accepted standards. For instance, a person with a BMI of 40 is considered morbidly obese. However, someone with a BMI lower than 40 may still suffer from morbid obesity if he or she also has at least one serious co-morbid disease or health condition.

Private Vs Public Fees

You may choose to be a public or a private patient. This page provides patients with the different options for surgery in the private or public hospital system.

** Please note that Melbourne Weight Loss Centre provides a private service only. If you are intending to use the public health system, you will need your GP to refer you to the public hospital system as we do not accept public patients.

Public Hospital Patients:

Australian residents who decide to be a public patient are entitled to free treatment under Medicare. Your treatment will be carried out by an appropriate specialist which will be arranged prior to your admission. After discharge, your care will either be continued in an outpatient clinic or you will be referred to your local general practitioner.

In a public hospital, the surgery is usually performed by a registrar but the registrar is supervised by a senior surgeon who is responsible for your care.

There are no fees for surgery in the public hospital, however, there is a waiting list. Your position on the waiting list will be based on the severity of your condition. Follow up visits after surgery will be arranged through the hospital.

Private Hospital Treatment:

In the private health system, I will perform your surgery personally and will also look after you if you are admitted as an in-patient. All follow up appointments will be in my office.

What Is A Gastric Band

Melissas bariatric journey | Ohio State Medical Center

Gastric Banding is a purely restrictive type of weight-loss surgery . It involves in wrapping an adjustable silicon band around the upper part of the stomach to create a narrowing outlet effect and thereby limiting the capacity of food that can be stored in the upper stomach.

When the band is inflated with fluid, the stomach is effectively separated into 2 compartments: a small, upper pouch which holds roughly 50-100ml and a much larger, lower stomach compartment .

The upper pouch of stomach becomes the functional part in terms of storage and, as it is small, it fills up quickly with food giving an early feeling of fullness or satiety. This helps to limit excessive intake of food and thus results in weight loss.

The restriction of outflow of food from the upper pouch to the lower part of stomach can be increased or decreased by the amount of fluid placed in the band through an access port under the skin of the abdomen.

The excess weight loss is expected to be around 30-40%. *

‘seeing Calum Suffer Has Been Heartbreaking’

Accessing the surgery involved a three-year wait, during which Mr Sanderson’s concerned father Tim wrote to then-Tasmanian health minister Michael Ferguson.

“He was knocked back because he was deemed not sick enough, he is required to develop diabetes in order to be accepted which was an incredibly bizarre position to be put in so I challenged that,” Tim Sanderson said.

“Seeing Calum suffer has been heartbreaking, there are things that he has wanted to do but has not been able to do, he has suffered out in public.

“Obesity I think is quite savage one of the things about people who are obese is they appear to be invisible, our society’s not geared for fat people finding seats strong enough, clothes big enough to fit in.”
