Now Is A Good Time To Try Government Work
The move to an online environment, necessitated by the pandemic, can be helpful to job seekers who can’t attend events in person. Experts recommended tuning in to webinars and virtual information sessions: 18F has hosted sessions for its product manager role and Viza told CIO Dive that USDS has moved to virtual recruiting sessions, too.
Relocating to DC was also a constraint for many would-be civic technologists like Karman, who ended up joining 18F instead of USDS .
Now, all interested applicants can try government work remotely: USDS director Matt Cutts wrote to Hacker News users that “if you wanted to try a short tour, now is a very good time things are quite remote-friendly right now. Then when the COVID situation is better, you’d have better information about whether the DC trade-off is worthwhile.”
Some of Miklik’s clients don’t have the option to work in an office, so that barrier being gone has made a tremendous difference, they said.
“I’ve actually gotten clients into jobs where they probably wouldn’t have been able to a year and a half ago,” Miklik said. “They wouldn’t have been able to relocate, or they wouldn’t have been able to navigate downtown DC as easily. So it’s a huge thing, and it’s a big one for accessibility and representation on teams.”

Learning about the variety of work experiences that my co-workers came to the table with. My colleagues include former attorneys, accountants, academics, engineers, computer scientists, and more. Snag A Job In The Biden Administration
You’re in luck if you want to work for the Joe Biden administration. The new Democratic president is filling up roughly 4,000 political jobs that change hands when a new president arrives.
But you’ll have to move quickly as Biden is anxious to get up to full strength as he races to replace former Trump administration staffers with his own people. And there might be some stiff competition.

Of course, it helps if you have powerful connections who can vouch for you before the right people. But don’t despair if you don’t count political insiders among your family and friends. You might still land your dream job at the State Department, the National Park Service or the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Biden’s team has even put together a job portal where you can apply directly for everything from White House jobs to obscure posts like a seat on the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission or the US-Russia Polar Bear Commission. The Biden administration is also promising to build its team from a big talent pool that “looks like America and works for all Americans.”

What Did You Want To Do Growing Up And In College
Ive always had an international bent and have been interested in the role of institutions, but I only managed to channel those interests during my undergraduate days. Through friends, classes, campus involvement, and internships, I became passionate about international development in Africa. In particular, I was drawn to the role that improved governance can play in improving livelihoods and opportunities. This led me to want to be involved in formulating and implementing U.S. policy towards improving governance in Africa. Somehow I got lucky and managed to find a job that allowed me to explore this passion.
Dc Government Employees Prepare For Return To Their Workplaces Starting Monday
When almost all of D.C.s government employees return to their offices in person starting Monday in some cases after as long as 16 months working from home theyll be greeted with balloons, free food, Pilates and other perks that city leaders hope will ease an uncertain transition.
One after another, dozens of agency directors mentioned the food they would offer, from bagels to pastries to pizza, and their other plans for their workers return as they sat side-by-side in a conference room Friday at the first in-person meeting of Mayor Muriel E. Bowsers full Cabinet since 2019.
Unique Morris-Hughes, who runs the citys Department of Employment Services on Minnesota Avenue NE, noted that some of the eateries where her employees used to buy lunch during the workday have closed during the pandemic, and arranged for food trucks to park by their buildings loading dock during the first week back to provide lunch options.
The citys homeland security and emergency management agency will entertain returning workers with jumbo-sized Uno and Jenga games.
City administrator Kevin Donahue said he would cook at the Wilson Building: Ill be making pancakes from scratch, the Donahue family secret recipe.
Not all employees think the call to work in person makes sense. I dont really understand the rush to get us back into the office, said Hannah Sheehy, who works for the Department of Health.

Work On Capitol Hill As A Staffer For A Lawmaker
The odds of landing a job on Capitol Hill are in your favor. You just need to know how to look because chances are, the best gigs aren’t going to get posted publicly.
First, let’s explain the universe of possibilities: 435 members’ offices in the House, 100 in the Senate, and dozens of committees.
Lawmakers need a cadre of staff to help them with a series of tasks, including researching and tracking legislation, communicating with the media and the outside world, writing their speeches, responding to calls and letters from their constituents, or coordinating with the White House and federal agencies. The committees are where the grunt work happens for turning bills into law and conducting oversight on the rest of the US government.
While there are a few job boards you absolutely must know, nothing beats good old-fashioned networking the art of getting to know people who know people who can hire you. As in any career, seeking out experts who have your dream job, arranging informal interviews, and leaning on your school’s alumni network will help you learn of job opportunities on the Hill.
“For people that want to work in the political, public affairs, or business world, they will not have an opportunity to work anywhere that has more impact,” said Margaret Gottlieb, the career director at the George Washington School of Political Management.

On Culture And Growth
If youre looking for a diverse workplace, the D.C. government is for you. From the colleagues you work with to the host of different job types we have, I dont think any other employer can say they have more variety. You can go online and see jobs for recruiting, public information officers, social media coordinators, brand managers, lawyers, communicators, and accounting.
Go Directly To An Agency’s Website
Once you have pinpointed the agency you’re aiming for, check out its job board directly. “Most agencies have their own job boards, and you may see additional positions on those sites that you don’t see on the broader site,” McManus says. In most cases, you still have to go through USAJobs to apply, but there are positions that are exempt from the competitive system and allow for more direct hiring.

Education Training & Certification
The House and Senate do not have standard hiring processes for filling positions in their members offices, other than some requirements set for all federal employees. Each member of Congress hires how they see fit.
- Education: There are no set education requirements for entry-level Congressional staffers, but many have an undergraduate degree and perhaps a graduate degree in fields such as political science, public policy, law, and communications. Given the competition for these positions, the value of at least a bachelor’s degree cannot be overstated.
- Experience: Candidates dont necessarily need any particular experience to be hired in a Congressional office, but it helps. Those with some experience in politics are more likely to get a paid job rather than an unpaid internship to start, but unpaid internships can provide a stepping stone to a paying job later. Candidates may also volunteer their services during campaigns and at other critical times.
- Citizenship:Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and be seeking citizenship. An exception to this rule exists for refugees and those who have been granted asylum. They must pledge their allegiance to the U.S.
Be Patient But Persistent
The federal hiring process can be slow and full of hurdles. In short, applying for a federal job and getting an answer takes time. Some agencies are better than others, and a number have special hiring flexibilities for critical positions that allow them to go outside the normal process and make quicker decisions. But in truth, applying for a federal job requires patience and persistence, and you may be competing against hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants.
You can track the status of your application by logging into your USAJOBS.gov account or from within the agency system that you used to submit the application. If there is radio silence for several weeks after the job submission period has closed, email the contact person listed on the job announcement. Following up by phone is okay, too. You may not always get a response, but its worth trying to determine the state of play.

Congressional Staffer Skills & Competencies
Certain qualities are needed to succeed in this field:
- Speaking skills: Staffers might find themselves addressing the public, and short of that, the job requires a great deal of interaction with other staffers, politicians, and constituents. They must express themselves clearly.
- Reading and writing skills: They have to correspond in writing with a variety of individuals.
- Basic computer skills: They handle basic programs like Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- An ability to work well under pressure: Staffers must be able to juggle deadlines and commitments without error because missing one or more can have serious consequences. They should be able to work calmly and efficiently in stressful situations.
- Organizational skills:The job can require keeping abreast of multiple details and being able to find certain information at a moment’s notice.
- Physical stamina: Workdays can sometimes be long and, depending upon the position, require multiple hours on their feet.
