GRC Conference Invitation

Date Published:

As an experienced professional who has worked with pharmaceutical, medical device, financial service, government, retail and hedge fund organizations, it did not take me many years to realize that audits and assessments were largely manual, tedious and intensive activities. In the past, some of the biggest names used sophisticated and custom governance, risk and compliance tools such as ServiceNow and RSA Archer for auditing, compliance management and risk assessments. However, the overall effort or cost to perform and carry out audits remained the same or even increased in some of these cases.

What had been introduced was a semidigitalization of effort and data. For example, ServiceNow has a vendor management module with an interesting feature that conducts supplier assessments, but the number of hours that it took to complete one vendor assessment was hardly reduced before and after the installation of the GRC software. Moreover, the tool stored information and data from the previous couple of years, but that data was not being used to generate insights into vendor assessments or internal audits.

Governance, Risk and Compliance Management is to be achieved through a Governance framework which has to be implemented in the organization at a process level and then institutionalized within the organization using Global Best Practices. On the other hand, the use of Tools and Technology alone cannot create a governance environment. In absence of a Process based Governance Management Framework, the Tools and Technology are orphaned. CMMI Institute Partner DQS has developed a Governance Management Framework called DQS CorpAxis Governance Management Framework DCGMF. To use an apt quote .Governance is too important to be left to people and technology alone Process makes the difference. This sums-up the essence of the situation.

Understanding Cyber Risk Metrics And Reporting

    Date Published:

Cyber risk is top of mind for organizations around the world, but effectively addressing that risk and reporting on it to enterprise leaders require a nuanced approach based on organizations risk appetite and strategic aims.

In the Cyber Risk Metrics and Reporting Automation session at the recent 2021 Governance, Risk and Control conference put on by The IIA and ISACA session presenter Priya Mouli emphasized the importance of a strategic and intentional approach to reporting on cyber risk. The stakes are high, said Priya, noting that a recent emphasis on attacking critical infrastructure and supply chains makes addressing cyber risk increasingly important for enterprises today.

Priya said too many organizations still consider technology risk management to be a compliance function when the scope should be wider and designed to further the organizations strategic objectives. That can be tricky, though, given all the variables and stakeholders involved.

We generally want cyber risk thresholds to be in line with the organizations risk appetite, Priya said. As practitioners, we know how challenging it is to translate a high-level qualitative risk appetite statement into quantitative thresholds at the domain area, and risk and metric levels.

Five Takeaways From The 2018 Governance Risk And Control Conference

ISACA Conference Oceania 2021 – Threat Landscape Panel Discussion

    Date Published:

Governance, risk and compliance professionals shared ideas and gathered insights on how their roles are evolving in light of enterprises digital transformation efforts, evolving trends in innovation, and growing regulatory and security risks recently at the sold-out 2018 GRC Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

The conference, organized by The Institute of Internal Auditors and ISACA, took place 13-15 August. Key takeaways from the conference include:

Its time to challenge conventionsKeynote speaker Luke Williams, author, professor of marketing at the NYU Stern School of Business and founder of the W.R. Berkley Innovation Labs, told a packed opening session audience that organizations seldom take the time to question the underlying reasons why existing practices and procedures were put in place, stifling opportunities for innovation.

Williams said enterprises are often paralyzed by possibility with an abundance of incremental ideas for improvement, but tend to lack the unconventional, bold strategy options capable of delivering a major impact. Eventually, he said, organizations that lack a forward-looking openness to change will be overtaken by competitors.

ISACA board Chair and closing day keynote presenter Rob Clyde implored the audience to focus on safeguards to prevent unintentional harm from AI projects and services.

The next GRC Conference will take place 12-14 August 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
