Government Jobs That Train You

Don't Miss

Where The Jobs Are State By State

Federal Employment Training

Most of the openings among the estimated two million federal civilian jobs, which amounts to roughly 30,000 vacancy announcements at any given time, can be found through the centralized resources of USA Jobs, the federal governments official jobs site. Federal civilian job openings are also listed through Go Government, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that, in its own words, works to revitalize our federal government by inspiring a new generation to serve and by transforming the way government works.

In addition, there are jobs at the state government level, which can be found by accessing the resources of each individual state. The map below provides state-by-state links to the relevant agencies.

Apply Immediately But Very Carefully

Competition is stiff, so apply immediately when you find a position that you are qualified for. Dont waste your time applying if you dont meet the requirements.

Read the How to Apply section of the job announcement before starting your application so that you are fully prepared to respond completely. This section tells you what is required to apply, including any required documents. To have your application considered, be sure to meet each of the requirements specified.

After you begin the application , the system will take you from USAJOBS to the agency online application system.

Then, you may be required to complete other agency-specific required steps such as:

  • Providing more personal information.
  • Providing additional documentation.
  • Answering eligibility questions.
  • Completing an occupational questionnaire. Tip: look for a preview of the questions under the Qualifications OR Required documents section before you begin so that you can ensure your resume content supports your answers to the questions.

The time it takes to apply varies and depends on the job and the agencys requirements. Allow yourself at least an hour, maybe a little longer if you are new to the process.

After submitting your application, go back to the Application section of your USAJOBS account and verify that your application is indicated as received by the agency. The application status field should display received if the application submitted correctly.

The Perks Of Working For The Government

There are a number of tangible benefits the come with working for the federal government, and in many cases this also applies to jobs in state and local government.

  • Without going to deeply into a civics lesson, it was Abraham Lincoln who defined the nature of American governance in the Gettysburg Address as, of the people, by the people, for the people. In many ways, this is reflected in the nature of government service. Working for the government might mean overseeing USDA inspections that insure the quality of our food supply, conducting scientific research that leads to breakthroughs in science and technology, conducting surveys and analyzing data that creates better social programs for children and families in need. Or, it could mean writing the reports, building the infrastructure, or cooking the meals that support those vital projects. As the BLSs 2014 Career Outlook Report notes, One of the biggest draws of federal work is the chance to make a positive difference, which workers say is a source of pride. Satisfaction often comes from knowing that they are helping and serving people in their roles as public employees.

Government Agencies With Remote Jobs And Flexible Work

The federal government has been a leader in the telecommuting movement for more than two decades. Pilot programs by U.S. agencies have shown that working from home is a viable option, which makes government agencies with remote jobs a great resource to consider if you want to work remotely.

As noted in FlexJobs roundup of the complete history of working from home, the federal governments involvement with work-from-home options began in the 1990s, when the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration began a broad pilot program for federal workers.

More recently, a report on the status of telework in the federal government released in 2018 shows that participation in remote work programs has increased steadily, and that telework has helped the federal government save money, retain valuable employees, reduce commute miles, and maintain operations during emergencies. Sixty-four percent of agencies met at least one telework participation goal set for fiscal year 2017.

A survey done by Harvard with the U.S. Patent Office found that when workers were allowed to work from anywhere , there was a 4.4% increase in output compared to when workers were simply allowed to work from home.

    • The benefit of veterans preference.
    • A federal resume is usually longer than a civilian resume 4 to 6 pages is not uncommon or unexpected.
