Identification Process Can Be Tricky
Since protecting your personal and financial information is of the utmost importance to the credit rating agencies, a sophisticated identity verification process is used when you make your request. It involves questions that are derived from various entries in your credit report such as previous employment, past residences, purchases or transactions made, etc. It is important to realize that some of the questions may result in a None or Does Not Apply as the correct answer. By carefully reading and answering these questions, most people should have no problem with the identification process.
Are There Other Ways I Can Get A Free Report
Under federal law, youre entitled to a free credit report if
- you get a notice saying that your application for credit, employment, insurance, or other benefit has been denied or another unfavorable action has been taken against you, based on information in your credit report. Thats known as an adverse action notice. You must ask for your report within 60 days of getting the notice. The notice will give you the name, address, and phone number of the credit bureau, and you can request your free report from them
- youre out of work and plan to look for a job within 60 days
- youre on public assistance, like welfare
- your report is inaccurate because of identity theft or another fraud
- you have a fraud alert in your credit file
If you fall into one of these categories, contact a credit bureau by using the below.
Pick The Reports You Want
There are three major US credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Each maintains a separate account of your “credit record”. Therefore, certain credit information might appear on one report but not on another.Choose the reports you’d like to receive. The Fair Credit Reporting Act permits you to receive one of each credit report every 12 months in other words, you could request an Equifax report today, an Experian report tomorrow, and a TransUnion report the next day.I like to receive all three reports at once, so I’m going to check all three boxes.

Review And Download Your Reports For Each Credit Bureau
The final two steps will be repeated for each credit bureau from which you’ve requested a credit report. At the end of each bureau’s steps, you will have the option to download a PDF of your credit report. I recommend either printing a hard copy or encrypting the downloaded file to prevent cyber-thieves from gaining access to this sensitive information.During the verification process, you will be asked questions about past loans, credit lines, etc. in order to verify your identity.
Monitor Your Credit Regularly
Monitoring your scores and reports can tip you off to problems such as an overlooked payment or identity theft. It also lets you track progress on building your credit. NerdWallet offers both a free credit report summary and a free credit score, updated weekly.
Heres how the information youll get from AnnualCreditReport.com differs from what free personal finance sites may provide:
Data from all three major credit bureaus
An extensive history of your credit use

You Can Only Access Your Report Every 12 Months
Another commonly listed complaint is the restriction placed upon accessing your free credit report to only once per year. Apparently, some consumers believe this applies to once every calendar year, when in fact, it means one time every 12 months. One easy way around this restriction and one we highly recommend is to request a single report from a different agency every four months. In this way, you can access your free report throughout the year, and begin again with agency number one exactly 12 months later.
Your Childs Credit Report
Parents can place a Protected Consumer security freeze on their childs credit reports to help prevent identity theft. Check a childs credit report before they turn 16.
Youll need to provide the following:
- childs full name
- copy of social security card
- addresses for the past two years
- copy of the parents drivers license
- copy of proof of residence for the parent, such as a utility bill
- guardians should include guardianship papers
Send or submit the information to each of the three major credit reporting bureaus.

Absolute Garbage Info Submission System
I went through the whole process, providing accurate and complete information. “We are unable to process your request” and maybe something about my info not being correct or something. Zero explanation as to what the problem is. The previous address ? You don’t like my SSN ? Etc etc. No info about WHY you are unable to process the request. But there’s good news: they have a solution! “So write a letter to the address below like it’s 1984 and wait 15 days or you can call our toll free number”.So, of course I call the number they provided, which is *******228, and it is only two things: 1) a one-by-one prompt where you can enter all the VERY same info you did on the website, except it will take 10 times as long to do as the robot repeats everything back to you slowly to press “1” if it’s correct and 2) another option for a series of recordings providing redundant info that’s already stated on the website, except that it is spoken to you in a robot voice for those unable to read, I guess.Their “customer service” number is useless. No human. No help. No explanation as to what went wrong. Was it on my end, was it on your end. Nothing. The website is garbage. Just unadulterated garbage.

Tips For A Positive Credit Report
- Pay your loans and other bills on time. Even if you fell into trouble in the past, you can rebuild your credit history by beginning to make payments as agreed. Paying your debts on time will have a positive effect on your credit score and can improve your access to credit.
- To help show that you have not borrowed too much, try to minimize how much you owe in relation to your credit limit. Don’t automatically close credit card accounts that have been paid in full and haven’t been used recently because that may lower your available credit. However, you may want to close a card with a zero balance if you pay a monthly fee for the card.
- If you believe you cannot repay your creditors, contact them immediately and explain your situation. Ask about renegotiating the terms of your loan, including the amount you repay. Reputable credit counseling organizations also can help you develop a personalized plan to solve your money problems, but less-reputable providers offer questionable or expensive services or make unsubstantiated claims.
Which Annual Credit Report Is Best
AnnualCreditReport.com gives consumers access to all three credit reports from the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. No single report is better than the others.
In fact, its important to check all three reports, as accounts and info that appears on one report might be missing from another. Some creditors only report to one or two credit bureaus, so checking all three of your reports ensures you get a complete picture of your credit profile.

Fixing Errors In A Credit Report
Anyone who denies you credit, housing, insurance, or a job because of a credit report must give you the name, address, and telephone number of the credit reporting agency that provided the report. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act , you have the right to request a free report within 60 days if a company denies you credit based on the report.
You can get your credit report fixed if it contains inaccurate or incomplete information:
- Contact both the credit reporting agency and the company that provided the information to the CRA.
- Tell the CRA, in writing, what information you believe is inaccurate. Keep a copy of all correspondence.
Some companies may promise to repair or fix your credit for an upfront fee–but there is no way to remove negative information in your credit report if it is accurate.

Reports Are Free But Credit Scores Are Not Included
Users of the system who expect to receive a copy of their credit score along with the free credit report are bound to be disappointed. Thats because the parameters of this government-mandated service do not include the FICO-based credit score that the agencies also compile. While the reporting agencies do offer the option of paying to get a copy of your credit score, that service is not required. If you want to access your credit score after receiving your free annual credit report or at any time you can always do so through FICOs official website.
But, you may already have access to your credit score for free through a company youre already doing business with. Before you pay to see your score, check this list of financial institutions and credit card issuers that offer members free FICO scores accessing your credit score could be as simple as logging into your online banking portal.

For instance, you may be asked what year you took out a car loan, the balance on your mortgagea dollar rangeor to choose a city youve previously lived in from a list. If you answer those questions successfully, youll be able to view your credit report.
